Amid the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, Pack 98 in Gahanna is keeping their Scouts engaged and involved.

“[When] we knew we couldn’t meet in person, we decided to make the move to a virtual platform so that we didn’t lose Scouts. Not having a program would have been a disservice to our Scouts,” said Andrea Gonzalez, Cubmaster for Pack 98.

The leaders in Pack 98 have sent challenges and ideas to their Scouts through Facebook, and also encouraged them to post their adventures to help motivate other Scouts.

“Even if our Scouts only saw each other for a little bit and did nothing but goof off and joke around, they were still connecting with each other. That was our starting point, then we worked with the families on the transition to keep them involved,” said Andrea.

Scouts have also enjoyed being outside, where they’ve participated in activities like fishing, creeking, wading in the water, and catching crawdads. Pack 98 asked their Scouts for ideas, and suggestions included Lego and Minecraft themed meetings, a trip to the Dayton Air Force Museum and a night hike at local parks.

“I’ve enjoyed spending quality time with my friends virtually,” said AJ L., Webelos from Pack 98.

“I feel [our Scouts] are benefitting most from knowing we’re here for them. Whatever the program offering is…we are a constant in the middle of all that’s been going on in their lives,” said Andrea.

Pack 98 also wants to encourage other Packs to not to give up and lean your network.

“There is so much going on these days. We can’t lose sight of why we’re here. These Scouts are our future. Continue inviting Scouts to outings, keep families informed, and don’t give up.”
