Dear Simon Kenton Council Scouting Families –

Scouting continues to provide life-changing experiences for thousands of young people across our communities, states, and nation. For over 110 years, the Simon Kenton Council has instilled the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

As our Council continues the delivery of its critical mission into our second century, it is important that we also keep pace with an ever-changing world.

While local units and the BSA National Council are funded by fees and dues, our local council has relied upon the generosity of those willing to contribute to the Family Friends of Scouting (FOS) campaign. These donations have been an integral part of the financial support needed to operate Scouting locally. Contributions help to fund many essential services and resources to volunteers, units, and Scouting families, such as operations of our camps, Scouting programs and activities, youth and adult leader training, communications, and a full-time staff.

Though the Simon Kenton Council remains fiscally sound, it is important that we continue to evaluate our funding sources looking forward. While FOS contributions have been a critical part of the Council’s funding formula, these contributions have been declining as costs continue to increase. While many member families have elected to contribute, 83% of families do not. The FOS funding model is no longer an efficient and effective method of generating funds to support council operations.

As such, the Council’s Executive Board, with input from leaders from across the council, has elected to implement an annual program fee of $60 ($5 per month) per youth member.  This fee becomes effective on January 1, 2022 for all new and renewing members. This fee replaces the $12 insurance fee that was put in place in 2020. This $48 local fee increase is in addition to the annual fees required by the BSA National organization. Click here for a summary of membership fees. This local fee will take the place of Unit family FOS presentations.

There are sure to be many questions about this change. Please see the FAQ which will address many of them. You can also reach out to us directly at skcquestions@scouting.org

Scouting remains one of the most valuable investments that we can make to support our youth today. Developing tomorrow’s leaders, instilling character and service and providing once-in-a-lifetime adventures, Scouting continues to leave a lasting impact on our communities.
